Professor Yuri Levin (Department of Physics, Columbia Uni)
Yuri was born in the Ukraine and first came to Australia to study. He has a bachelors degree in physics from the University of Melbourne (1992), and a PhD in theoretical physics from Caltech (1999). Subsequently he worked at Berkeley (USA), the Canadian Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics, and Leiden University (The Netherlands), before moving to Monash Uni (Australia). Since 2017 he has been part of the Physics Department at Columbia Uni, and a member of the Flatiron Institute (USA).
Yuri's research interests are predominantly theoretical, but within that discipline they are quite varied. A recurring theme is accretion and the physics of compact objects. He has an enduring interest in gravitational waves and their detection, and this has led to his involvement in pulsar timing studies.
When not fashioning cosmic models, Yuri likes to tango.
